Historically, to get a new piece of Canon gear when it first hits the streets, you need to preorder. However, some items are harder to get than others. My guess is that the Rebel series bodies will hit the shelves in high volumes, making them relatively easy to get within a few weeks of the first deliveries (unlike 1-series bodies). I'm less certain of the new L lens' early availability. They are going to be very highly desired, but carry a very high price which will reduce the demand for them.

I anticipate this to be an awesome lens in all regards; however, the price will stop all but the serious photographers from making this investment. Canon UK held a glitzy event for their new Spring collection of products this morning at the Science Museum in Central London. Against a somewhat ironic backdrop of Euro 2008 (well, at least for us England supporters), which Canon are sponsoring, no less than 36 new products were shown off to over 200 members of the press and trade. In a somewhat low-key line-up from the camera side of things, the new Canon EOS 450D / Digital Rebel XSi stood out as the main draw - unless you can afford several thousand pounds for the new 800mm and 200mm lenses, that is. We managed to make our way through the throng and literally grab a couple of minutes with the Canon 450D, plus get hands-on with the new Digital IXUS 80 IS and A-series Powershot compacts.

There are a lot of things to like about the just-announced Canon Digital Rebel XSi (450D). Inclusion of the DIGIC III processor is important. I'm using that processor in the G9, and it elevates the game noticeably. Also, 3.5 fps in a Rebel? My gosh, I don't have that speed in my EOS 5D. Having such a fast frame rate in a camera that sells for $799 US is a boon to folks who want to leverage burst mode. And you can shoot up to 53 JPEGs in burst, or 6 RAWs. Not bad at all. Pre-PMA 2008: Alongside its camera releases Canon has also announced new PIXMA all-in-one devices. First up is the MX7600, showcasing a new ink technology - PgR (Pigment Reaction). This pre-treats the media with a clear layer ahead of the ink, effectively turning plain paper into coated and offering many benefits in terms of durability and quality - clever stuff. The MX850 is more conventional in terms of print technology but features such as automatic duplexing of both scanned sources and printed output make it a useful tool to have around your SoHo (Small or Home Office).

Pre-PMA 2008: The PIXMA ip2600 replaces both the ip1800 and ip2500 at the entry-level end of Canon's printer range and offers 4-ink A4 printing at 4800 x 1200 dpi with class-leading 2pl (picolitre) droplet size for finer detail and color gradation. ChromaLife100 dye-based ink formulation promises longer life prints too, with Canon claiming up to 100 years of fade-free enjoyment if the prints are stored in a suitable album. The ip2600 will be available from February for around $49.99.
