August 20, 2008 - Casio today introduced three compact cameras, two of which incorporate a new processing module called EXILIM Engine 3.0. In addition to enhanced lighting compensation and anti-shake functions, the new engine enables a feature called "Makeup" that smoothes skin and softens shadows in portrait shots. As the photographer adjusts the strength of the effect, the result is shown live on the LCD display. The three cameras, with prices ranging from $179.99 to $299.99, will be available in October. September 16, 2008 - Casio today introduced the Exilim EX-FH20, its second high-speed digital camera, featuring 40 frame-per-second burst rate and the ability to shoot movies at 1000 frames per second, priced at $599.99. While the burst rate is lower than the company\'s 60 fps EX-F1 released in March for $999 (see review here), several specs of the new camera are actually superior to its pricier predecessor.

Earlier this week, Casio announced a digital camera that captures much of the spirit of its stunningly speedy EXILIM PRO EX-F1, but at a much more affordable pricepoint. At the time of the Casio FH20's announcement, we promised further details would be coming shortly, and later that day we posted our Casio FH20 hands-on preview. The Casio Exilim EX-FH20 is an advanced point-and-shoot that looks and feels a lot like a digital SLR. As with its predecessor, the groundbreaking EX-F1, the main selling point here is pure, blistering speed. The EX-FH20 is capable of capturing 40 high-resolution frames per second. While this isn\'t quite as fast as the EX-F1\'s 60 fps, but it is still an extraordinary achievement when compared to the 3-5 fps we typically see. The camera is also capable of high-speed video. While it can capture at a maximum of 1000 frames per second, the resolution has to drop incredibly low in order to do so. Again, while slower than the EX-F1\'s 1200 fps, the EX-FH20 still outperforms the overwhelming majority of point-and-shoots. Further, the EX-FH20 manages to usurp the EX-F1 in terms of effective resolution, mustering 9.1 megapixels compared to the EX-F1\'s 6 megapixels. The EX-FH20 is also priced much lower, at $599.99 compared to the EX-F1\'s $999.99.

The Casio Exilim EX-Z300 is a new $400 point-and-shoot model from Casio, due to ship in October. It has a 3-inch screen, 4x optical zoom, 10.1-megapixel resolution, and the option to capture HD video. Overall it struck us as an average effort, although it did have two interesting features. The first is family priority face detection. You access the "Set Family" function, snap photos of your loved ones, and the camera stores them internally and gives them focus priority next time you take a picture. The second innovation is Make-up Mode, which puts a quick Photoshop-style airbrush job a button-press away...

Casio\'s Exilim EX-Z85 is a new budget point-and-shoot camera, available in eight colors, and primarily designed, according the the advertisements, to be stuck in a purse. While there\'s a certain amount of pointless inanity to the camera, like being able to change the focusing target into a teddy bear or a heart, underneath it all, it seems to be a surprisingly competent piece of gear. It has some manual controls, a wide variety of image presets, good construction and a low price. This camera strikes us as being a good, entry level, low priced point-and-shoot. While we can\'t comment on image quality at this point, from our brief hands-on, the Z85 strikes us as one of the better sub-$200 cameras around.
