HP announced yesterday that it is looking to change their business model for HP-branded cameras. They want to concentrate and realign resources to work on their Print 2.0 initiative that was announced back in May 2007.

In a move which will be of no surprise to many Hewlett Packard has outlined plans for the future of its digital camera business, announcing that it is to licence an OEM partner to design, source and distribute HP-branded cameras. This shift in strategy is intended to allow the technology giant to concentrate on developing its Print 2.0 initiatives, strengthening its position in the home and commercial printing markets. The current range of cameras is expected to remain on sale for the remainder of this year with the new partnership deal to follow in the early part of 2008.

HP announces that it will seek an alternative business model for its HP-branded cameras, and is looking for an OEM partner that will be licensed to design, source and distribute digital cameras under the HP brand. The company will continue to sell its own cameras through the holiday season and intends to have the partnership in place in the first half of 2008. HP will accelerate its investment in the "Print 2.0" initiatives: to deliver a next-generation digital printing platform, to facilitate printing from the web, and to extend it's digital content creation...

HP has announced that they will no longer be designing their own digital cameras, instead licensing their brand to an OEM (similar to what GE is doing). They will continue selling their current lineup through the holiday season. I'll have a review of one of their cameras, the Photosmart Mz67, next month.

In purchasing this kind of cameras, don’t expect for the best quality. But for those who really don’t care of the quality and just want to treasure the moments, its 5.0 megapixel resolution still produces a standard quality images.
