Following recent speculation about a possible full-frame camera, Leica UK have issued a statement re-iterating their commitment to the M8 rangefinder.

Leica has announced plans to offer a major upgrade to its M8 digital rangefinder camera. Consisting of a new shutter - promising lower noise and vibration during exposure - and a protective sapphire glass LCD cover, the service may be pre-booked from March 2008 with the program due to commence as of August on a first-come-first-served basis. An additional two years of warranty cover is included and Leica has said it is investigating future upgrades including changes to the digital capture system - not least a possible sensor swap. The Leica Japan will release the Leica M8 digital camera. The camera provides a low-noise CCD image sensor with a resolution of 10.3MP. It also offers a 2.5 inch display and comes with an additional SD memory card. Pricing and availability have not been announced yet. Stay tuned for more updates.

Leica has updated M8 firmware available from its service website. Version 1.110 adds lens coding for 35, 50, 75 and 90mm Summarit-M lenses and shortens the interval between pre and main flashes when using M-TTL mode with Leica's SF24 D and SCA compatible flashguns. Battery capacity display is also improved as is the action of the central control wheel, helping to prevent accidental scrolling of the menu. Andrew Duncan from the website Buy and Shoot put the Leica M8 under the spotlight recently and lets see what was the verdict on this old favorite. The first thing that stands out is the under-stated style of the M8, which has an old school charm to it. On reviewing the M8, Duncan  was impressed by the image quality , its quick start up and non-existent shutter lag. However the M8 is ideal for the pro photographer and first time SLR shooters may find it difficult to use.   Conclusion: "The Leica M8 is a precision photographic tool that provides professional results.
