Pentax has announced a new high-grade consumer zoom lens today, the Pentax DA 17-70mm f/4 [IF] SDM. Providing a new lens in the same class as Pentax's popular constant-aperture 16-45mm f/4, the 17-70mm adds a 4x zoom range as well as Pentax's quick and quiet Supersonic Motor Drive (SDM) lens-based focusing motor.

Pentax has launched a consumer-level standard zoom lens for its range of digital SLRs: the slightly unwieldily named smc PENTAX-DA 17-70mmF4AL[IF] SDM. The lens offers the useful equivalent zoom range of 26-107mm combined with a maximum aperture of F4.0 and Pentax' SDM system which uses a supersonic motor for focusing. The latter is only compatible with Pentax' latest DSLR offerings - the K20D, K200D, K100D and K10D. On all other bodies focus mode will default to manual.

In the build-up to PMA 2008, Pentax announced that a pair of new telephoto primes - a 200mm f/2.8 and a 300mm f/4 - would be joining its high-end DA* series of lenses this spring. We took a look at the DA* 200mm f/2.8 back in March and were, to put it mildly, blown away by the price-to-performance ratio it offered. Two months later, its much anticipated larger brother, the Pentax DA* 300mm f/4 ED [IF] SDM, has made its way into our eager hands. While it wasn't the flashiest, the smallest, or the fastest camera we reviewed this month, the Pentax K200D is a huge leap forward for Pentax's base-level SLR line, putting weather sealing, advanced-amateur build quality, a powerful AF system, and - most importantly - a straightforward, no-nonsense approach to picture taking in a camera priced at the entry level. The K200D certainly isn't perfect, but we're betting that slightly advanced amateurs will bite on the bang-for-your-buck proposition that this camera offers.
