Ricoh has snuck a new camera onto its global site - the Caplio RR770. A 7.1 megapixel sensor is served by a 34-102mm (35mm equiv.) lens and results may be viewed on a 3.0" 230k pixel LCD. Image storage is taken care of by SD cards or the 32MB internal memory - best reserved as a last resort - and the camera accepts standard AA batteries for effortless replacement wherever you may be. So okay, the specifications aren't going to set the world aflame but it looks like a solid little camera for younger members of the family or glovebox duty. Prices and availability are to be announced.

"The increase in resolution from 7 to 8 megapixels doesn't make a lot of difference to your photos, but thankfully the new image processing engine at least ensures that quality remains the same as the R6. The megapixel increase could have resulted in noisier images, but the R7 retains the same usable ISO range of 64-400, with only the fastest setting of ISO 1600 being a complete non-starter."

Ricoh today announced the successor to its GR Digital premium compact. The Ricoh GR Digital II carries over the well-received 28mm equiv. lens from its predecessor, matching it to a new 10 megapixel sensor and new GR Engine II image processing system. For those of us with one leg longer than the other there is a new electronic leveling system à la Nikon D3 and the option to shoot TLR-style square images. Performance is said to be improved with a larger buffer memory and halved RAW file-write time with the option of continuous shooting. Battery life is also said to have come on leaps and bounds with up to 370 shots now possible on a charge - the original gave up after 250. The Ricoh GR Digital II will cost £399.99 when it hits UK shops in December.

A review of the Ricoh Caplio R5 is available at Digital Lifestyles. The Ricoh Caplio R5 offers a strong 7.1 optical zoom lens, supported by vibration reduction, despite its small size. The Caplio R5 also features 7.2 megapixels resolution and a 2.5 inch screen.
Here are some of the review impressions:
“With its impressive 28mm-200mm lens, there’s a lot to like about the R5, and anyone prepared to work with the camera could eek out some high quality shots, although consumers looking for an easy-peasy, point’n’shooter might be frustrated with the camera’s poor low light performance.”

T3 UK took the Ricoh R8 for a spin and in their inimitable style calls it "sexy". The 28mm wide-angle shooter may not offer full manual controls however that is compensated by incorporating a plethora of features. The design is sleek, the interface intuitive and the 7x zoom impressive. However over all the image quality could have been better says T3.
Conclusion: "Macro mode trounces others on the market, getting as close as 1cm. Pictures aren\'t quite as pleasing, they seem a little softer, although there\'s bags of detail - even in shadow areas".

Cnet recently tested out the Ricoh GR Digital II, which boasts of a 10.1-megapixel CCD sensor and a 28mm-equivalent lens. The camera was appreciated for its solid construction; nice wide-angle lens and the addition of hot-shoe. However the lack of zoom lens, built-in optical viewfinder and clunky converter lens design makes the camera not suitable for everyone.
Conclusion:
"The GR Digital II is a cute compact camera that might appeal to street photographers looking to step away from a rangefinder and into digital, but it doesn\'t deliver the features, performance, or image quality it should given its steep price tag."

Trusted Reviews tested out the newly announced GX200, which replaces the popular and critically acclaimed GX100. Calling it a "tough little camera", the GX200 manages to impress with its compact form factor, its black and white mode and its EVF. However when it comes to image quality, the GX200 falls short especially at higher ISOs.
Excerpt from conclusion:
"Ricoh has tried to make a camera for the enthusiast photographer, a camera that the pro or enthusiast could slip into his pocket for a day and make sure he can still get a great shot. Design-wise, the company has pulled it off. The tough little camera is a beauty to hold and a joy to use, and I couldn\'t wait to see the pictures. It\'s the imaging aspect that\'s a disappointment though, and really lets the camera and Ricoh\'s ambitions down. The 12MP sensor and processing combination is frankly poor."
